Your first meeting with a pediatric urologist or nurse practitioner at Riley at IU Health focuses on getting acquainted with you and your child. Knowing your story helps us give the genuine, expert healthcare your child deserves.

Care You Can Trust

Your child's care may begin in the womb, at a certain stage of development or it may last through childhood and beyond. Whether it's a single procedure for a common condition, a lifetime of healthcare strategies for a rare urologic or genital condition or help with the transition from pediatric to adult care, our goal is the same: to give every child their best opportunity for optimal health.

As a parent, you may wish your child could receive healthcare from someone with the technical skills of a micro-surgeon and the compassion of a parent or family member. As the only pediatric urology program in Indiana, Riley at IU Health has a team of pediatric urologists who fit that description.

Our medical and surgical experts specialize in treating conditions of the urinary tract (kidneys, ureter, bladder) and genitalia, which can come in many forms—from common pediatric and adolescent urologic problems to the most complex genital abnormalities.

Some of these conditions have serious implications for your child’s health and emotional well-being as they mature. Many children come to us with multiple health problems that need to be managed in the context of a larger picture. Your child’s total health will always have top priority at Riley at IU Health.

We work with you to develop a treatment plan that addresses every aspect of your child’s health, personal development and quality of life, supported by experts from other medical disciplines who are part of our team. Because we specialize in working with children, our child life professionals are ready to help children understand and cope with difficult procedures or simply calm them during routine tests they may find frightening.

Recognized for Excellence

When you choose Riley at IU Health for your child’s health, you choose one of the top 10 pediatric urology programs in the nation. Our specialists have advanced training in the care and surgical correction of problems with the urinary tract and/or genitalia to provide your child with the highest level of care.

Through our partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine, members of our team contribute to pediatric urology research that is dedicated to improving care for children. As leaders in their field, our physicians publish original research, textbook chapters and review articles in medical journals. Because of our commitment to research, Riley at IU Health provides opportunities for qualified children to get the latest treatments for a variety of conditions through clinical trials.

Conditions & Services

Conditions Treated

The board certified pediatric urologists who lead our team are at the forefront of pediatric urology. Our physicians perform advanced procedures with proven outcomes. We are also committed to advancing pediatric urology with the latest surgical approaches and technologies. In fact, the pediatric urology group at Riley at IU Health is world renowned for reconstruction of the bladder, having pioneered and perfected the use of intestine to expand bladders and build continent urinary channels.

Among the common pediatric urologic conditions we treat are:

  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
  • Hernias & Hydroceles
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Kidney Stones
  • Labial Adhesions
  • Neurogenic Bladder
  • Phimosis & Paraphimosis
  • Posterior Urethral Valves (PUV)
  • Undescended Testes
  • Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction
  • Ureterovesical Junction (UVJ) Obstruction
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Vesicoureteral Reflux
  • Voiding Dysfunction

Our physicians have developed novel techniques for the surgical management and treatment of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a rare genetic disorder that keeps the adrenal glands from producing cortisol—a hormone that is necessary for life.

Other innovations include:

  • Lifelong bladder and kidney management for patients with spina bifida. Spina bifida patients have an opening in the spine that exposes the spinal cord and causes bladder and bowel dysfunction.
  • Sacral neuromodulation. This form of treatment uses electrical stimulation to correct such conditions as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and even fecal incontinence.
  • Robotic assisted surgery. This minimally invasive surgical technique uses very small tools to perform complex surgery inside the body.

Services Offered

We offer a number of different Pediatric Urology services. Below are some, but not all, of the services that we provide. If you have a question about a specific service that is not listed here, please contact our department.

  • Kidney, Ureter, Bladder X-ray (KUB)
  • Pediatric Voiding Cystourethrogram
  • Renal (Kidney) Ultrasound
