Each year, Riley at IU Health treats thousands of infants, children and adolescents for diabetes and pediatric endocrine disorders. Our team is experienced in treating both common and uncommon conditions.
Our pediatric diabetes
and endocrinology team is highly skilled. All pediatric endocrinologists at
Riley at IU Health are board-certified pediatricians. Each has received
additional subspecialty training in pediatric endocrinology (a branch of
medicine concerned with hormone-related disorders in children and adolescents)
and pediatric diabetology (a branch of medicine concerned with diabetes in
children and adolescents). Our team also includes certified diabetes educators
who partner with physicians to provide a wide range of educational resources.
Riley at IU Health partners with the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. They participate in ongoing research for a variety of pediatric endocrine disorders. Our patients have many opportunities to participate in clinical trials and other studies.

State Laws, Regulations and Policies for School Diabetes Care
The American Diabetes Association provides information on Indiana's rules for diabetes care in schools on its website.

A Section 504 plan is an agreement between the parents of a child with diabetes and a school. This plan ensures that the child has the same access to education as other children. If a Section 504 plan is requested, the parent or school representative needs to contact the Section 504 coordinator for the school district to begin the process. The American Diabetes Association provides a sample Section 504 plan on its website.

Mom's instinct helped get her daughter the care she needed
Ashley Henschen noticed some concerning symptoms in her two-year-old daughter. Layla was very thirsty and her diapers were constantly wet. The toddler also seemed irritable. Ashley eventually contacted Layla’s doctor, who conducted a urine test. The test revealed Layla’s blood sugar was extremely high. The family was instructed to go to the Riley Hospital for Children Emergency Department. Layla was then diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Now, Ashley wants to raise awareness about this condition.

We are committed to educating the next generation of highly skilled pediatric endocrinologists and diabetologists. We offer a three-year pediatric endocrinology fellowship program that provides extensive clinical training plus basic and clinical research training. The physicians within the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology serve as faculty members for the program and have received special recognition for their teaching efforts.
